Microdermabrasion uses tiny exfoliating crystals that are sprayed on the skin. It works best on problems such as dull skin, brown spots, and age spots. Because it is non-invasive and does not use aggressive chemicals like peels, microdermabrasion is best used for surface skin rejuvenation.
The technique also helps to thicken your collagen, which results in a younger looking complexion. Collagen is a protein in your skin that's abundant when you're a child and makes skin appear taut and smooth. Collagen production declines as we age, resulting in looser, uneven skin.

The Power of Vitamin D - From our Derm RF
Great post from our Derm RF site that I thought I'd share with you. I had no idea how much Vitamin D does for you. Worth the quick read:
If you want an “A” in anti-aging this summer, don’t drop your vitamin D supplement just because it’s sunny outside. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that prevents rickets in children, maintains bone density in adults, may inhibit certain cancers such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and possibly lessens the risk of diseases such as multiple sclerosis. While it is true that sunlight stimulates the production of vitamin D, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that you get your daily value of vitamin D from non-sun sources such as vitamin D–fortified milk, orange juice, salmon and other fatty fishes or a multivitamin. The truth is, if you seek your vitamin D from the sun, you’ll soak up a whole lot more than you bargained for, including accelerated aging and an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

Ambush Aging with Macro Exfoliation
One of the main reasons for dull and aging skin is the build up of dead skin cells. We know this and it's why we all exfoliate on a regular basis. This simple skin step does wonders for our skin by allowing our skin to absorb moisture and product, leaving our face fresh and younger looking. What you may not know is that deep exfoliation does even more. It used to be a treatment you could only get in your doctor's office through chemical peels or dermabrasion procedures. Big bucks and can be a bit intimidating. Now you really can get big results at home.
A recent advance in the dermatology industry is macro exfolition at home. Rodan+Fields is releasing their new Redefine MACRO Exfoliator within the next couple of days and it is creating a lot of media buzz. Marie Claire already scooped the release in its February issue and its reported that several beauty magazines will be highlighting reviews of the Redefine MACRO Exfoliator over the next few weeks.

The Skincare Basics
As with healthy eating, exercise and just about anything else, sticking with the basics first is important. Honoring the basics first allows you to keep it simple and get into a routine that will stick. Of course, eventually we will customize your routien to your skin type and problem areas. No worries. There are several effective product ingredients out there that can tackle that acne, fine lines, sun damage, and the overall look and feel of your skin. It is best, however, if you start with the basic skin care regimen and then add in the right product mix for your skin issues.
The basics of skin care are not complicated. We've heard them time and time again. However, with all the products, information, and opinion out there, it can get convoluted. And, I thought we should all have the basics down before I start posting information on specific ingredients and products for your skin concerns.
1. Wash your face
2. Exfoliate
3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
4. Protect from the sun
When you have the basics down, then add over the counter or dermatologist grade products to address your specific skin care issues.

Mini Facials at Home
Spa facials feel great and work wonders for your skin. But, unfortunately they take a lot of time and can cost a fortune. At home treatments are a great alternative to high cost salons and effective with the right products. Relaxation is a great benefit of facials – and even the do it yourself method forces you to sit back, relax, and take a pause. The major benefits, however, are for your skin. Facials are the way to improve the look and feel of your skin.
While a home based mini facial won’t do all the things that you would get at a salon, it will address the main skin needs – cleanse, firm, smooth, and moisturize. Daily exposure to the sun and elements dulls the skin and the exfoliation step in facials removes the dirt and dead skin cells to bring out the healthy bright skin underneath. Dead skin that your face naturally sheds on a regular basis which can clog pores and give the skin an aged look.
As a rule, once a month should be the frequency of a facial. That’s because it takes about 30 days for skin cells to move up to the surface and die and slough off – bringing back the dull, aged look. For best results, use a combination of products from the same company. This is important because each individual product is only as good as the full regimen. For your at home facial make sure you include an exfoliator, serum, and moisturizer with sun protection. Relax, enjoy, and bring out your great skin!Love those Lips
Only second to your eyes, your lips are the window to your age, your beauty, and your personality. Personally, my lips have gotten thinner now that I’m over 40 and the winter wind and gas heat does a number on them. When I joined Rodan + Fields, I knew it was a good business move, but I really had no idea how much I would be gaining from the skincare advice and products. It’s the extra bonus!! Whether you are looking for a solid business venture or just want better lips, you’ve come to the right place!!
Lose that Winter Dry Skin
If you live in a northern state, look forward to the changing seasons, and are a certifiable snow lover, then winter can be a wonderful time filled with snowball fights, tubing, skiing, warm fires and hot chocolate. But, as you turn up your furnace – especially with gas heat, the dry air inside and outside can make for constant dry skin. You may notice dry hands, feet, and elbows within the first couple of weeks of winter. It’s also important to remember that the rest of the body needs special attention in the winter months as well.
The best solutions to dry skin respond to the real causes of dry skin in the winter. It’s obvious that the drier air adds to the problem in the winter months. This is because the humidity level in the air outside drops significantly in winter months, even in the more southern states. This is exasperated by indoor heating which strips even more moisture from the air and your skin. Most other causes of dry skin, which are more apparent in the winter months, occur in the shower. Harsh soaps, loofas and other “scrubby” shower accessories, and steamy showers all pull more moisture from your skin. Keeping your skin moisturized and health in the winter is easy if you follow a few simple tricks.
1. Keep your shower lukewarm instead of hot and limit to about 5 minutes. This will prevent the shower from washing away important nutrients in your skin.
2. Exfoliate about every 3-4 weeks to remove dead skin cells and open the pores to receive moisture.
3. Use soft cloths and moisturizing body wash in the shower.
4. Pat dry with a towel instead of rubbing. Rubbing irritates the skin and removes the moisture products you just used in the shower.
5. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize – not just your face, hands and feet.
6. Drink lots and lots of water. Enjoy the winter months and get into a regular skincare regimen.
